Our Mission
Our mission is to provide psychological services within the school community through consultation, collaboration, research-based interventions, and individualized assessment in order to facilitate learning and promote positive mental health for all students.
What We Do
School psychologists help students succeed academically, socially, behaviorally and emotionally. They collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to create safe, healthy and supportive learning environments that strengthen connections between home, school, and the community for all students.
Some of the services we provide include:
- Working to increase student achievement by assessing barriers to learning and helping determine the best instructional strategies to improve learning
- Working with parents and school teams to enhance home-school collaboration
- Working within a multidisciplinary team to evaluate eligibility for special education services
- Facilitating parent, teacher and student understanding of a variety of disabilities and the impact on school, family and community functioning
- Assisting teachers in identifying appropriate intervention procedures and evaluating intervention outcomes
Organizations
To continue high professional standards, the staff at Psychological Services maintains membership in many professional organizations including:
- National Association of School Psychologists (NASP)
The National Association of School Psychologists is a professional
organization representing 19,600 members. The NASP mission is to promote educationally and psychologically healthy
environments for all children and youth by implementing research-based, effective programs that prevent problems,
enhance independence, and promote optimal learning. This is accomplished through state-of-the-art research and training,
advocacy, ongoing program evaluation, and caring professional service.
- Georgia Association of School Psychologists (GASP)
The Georgia Association of School Psychologists is the NASP state organization.
- American Psychological Association (APA)
The American Psychological Association, founded in 1892 and incorporated
in 1925, is the major psychological organization in the United States. The purpose of APA is to advance psychology as a science, as a profession,
and as a means of promoting human welfare. It attempts to accomplish these objectives by holding annual meetings, publishing psychological journals,
disseminating psychological literature, and working toward improved standards for psychological training and service (APA, 2000). Two divisions of
APA most closely tie with Cobb County's school psychologists:
- Georgia Psychological Association (GPA)
The Georgia Psychological Association is the state's APA affiliate organization.
